Abstract : In superscalar microprocessors, register file size is very important. A lack ofphysical registers can lead to a serious degradation in performance. A large register filehowever, can increase cycle time and power requirements. It is critical to size theregister file appropriately depending on the application.Presented in this thesis are two techniques to more efficiently manage register usethrough register reallocation. Reallocation is the process of reusing a register after it nolonger needs to be read. This may require fewer registers to attain a sustained level ofperformance or increase performance using the same number of registers.
