Abstract : In this thesis. a method for calculating the effective bandwidth of a variable bit rate(VBR) source using asymptotic approximations is presented. The sources are modeledby Markov chains and they are input to a statistical multiplexer. The autocovariance ofthe VBR source which is modeled by an N state Markovian process is compared with theautocovariance from simulation. The Kronecker sum is used to cover all possible outputrate processes. Using the Lyapunov equation, the state probability vector of the resultantmultiplexed output rate process is derived. This resultant multiplexed output rate processis input to the fluid buffer. The qucuing system is described and the fluid buffer model is.
